InsiderNJ Exclusive: An Interview with Ken Martin, Chair of the DNC

Ken Martin, Chair of the Democratic National Committee, came to New Jersey this weekend to rally Democrats.
He's not endorsing anyone in Tuesday's primary for governor.
He just wants to remind people out there that everyone in the country's watching New Jersey, including President Donald Trump - and Democrats have to stand up and fight back against the MAGA agenda.
A labor guy, former chair of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, Martin said of the field of statewide Democratic Party contenders, "We've got six great candidates, all displaying a wonderful coalition," he told InsiderNJ. "My position has always been the party bosses need to stay out of the fight" - and let the people decide at the ballot box.
Whoever wins on Tuesday, Martin wants to make sure the five losing candidates step up and back the winner.
"That's why I'm here," the DNC chair said. "I want to remind folks that if we're not unified, we're not going to win this, and that's what is most important: winning in November."
Martin breakfasted in Essex this morning with State Party Chairman LeRoy Jones and pressed on to make a pit stop in Central Jersey, with Peg Schaffer, Somerset County Chair and Vice Chair of the state party.
"A lot of great energy on the ground, with people ready to get out there," said Martin. "Regardless of who wins, my message is: support whoever our nominee is. We can win. Republicans are looking at the state too, and they see the closeness of the last race. Trump is personally obsessed with New Jersey. History not on our side with a third term by a Democratic candidate for governor, but there's a lot of momentum this year and a huge backlash against the MAGA agenda.
"Jack Ciattarelli is making a mistake cozying up to Donald Trump," Martin added.
The chairman acknowledged that Democrats continue to have a messaging problem and must do better.
New Jersey presents a battlefront opportunity.
"At the end of the day, we have to be willing to stand up for our values with an economic agenda that helps people - working people," said the DNC chairman. "We know this: people working are their tails off out there and too many of them can't get ahead. We must be willing to get out there into the union halls and the places are working and hurting. Our efforts must be relentless, and we have to even rise above partisanship to convince people that we haven't forgotten about them and their families, because right now, not enough people feel like the party is fighting for them."
Schaffer said she wanted Martin in her home county to fight in CD-7, where incumbent U.S. Rep. Tom Kean (R) wants to try to hold onto his seat, and multiple Democrats see an opportunity to run him off. The DNC chairman joined 60-70 door pounders in Bernards, Schaffer told InsiderNJ - undeterred by the rain.
