Senator Joe Cryan, chair of the Senate Higher Education Committee, issued the following statement denouncing the Trump Administration’s move to stop scheduling new appointments for international student visa applications:
“The move by the State Department to stop scheduling appointments for student visa applications is extremely disturbing. If they can’t get visas, they can’t study here. This is a spiteful action that will bring harm to international students, to American colleges and universities, and to the country’s economic and social strength.
“International students are not a threat to us, they are a valuable asset. They are especially important to higher education in New Jersey, making invaluable contributions to classroom learning, research and development, and to the schools’ finances.
“I welcome the judicial decision blocking the Trump Administration from denying Harvard the ability to enroll foreign students, but it's important the State Department follows that example and resumes processing student visa applications.
“International students will be the first to suffer if the Trump Administration continues with this misguided prohibition, but the higher education community in New Jersey will pay a heavy price as well.”
